I did a few things to my E46 yesterday:
1. Wash / Sealant before winter hits, using some sweet sweet AMMO skin that a buddy bought.
2. Installed my Oppo sticker
3. Updated the DME (engine management) & EGS (trans management) in the car. This is the big one. A really nice guy a named Scott (BaliDawg on the forums) Remoted into my computer, setup INPA / Winkfp / NCS / Daten files, and updated the software in the car. It had never been updated from the factory. The car is now LOADS smoother, feels peppier, and the trans shits great.
Anyone who has an E46, you should 100 percent update your software to the latest version. It’s not a terribly hard process, but Scott will do it for free if you contact him. He’s done hundreds.
11/10 would recommend!

You know, the E46 isn’t as young as it used to be and regular shits can sometimes be difficult. See your mechanic if your transmission has difficulty shitting.

I mean, a trans flush is sort of like a laxative?

I washed and waxed my E46 with collinite 845 and stuck it in my parents garage for the winter. I’m up to date on the DME, but I’ve got the six speed so smooth shifts only happen after the trans is warmed up. I’ve got a short throw shifter and bushings that are really tight until they’re warm.

i loooooooove that color. Yeah, I’m running the GM Autoslushbox on mine, so 5 speed, and the computer now is a TON smoother, it’s quite nice.

This post had me looking at non M E46 cars. They are pretty tough to come by with 3 pedals...I wouldn’t have guessed that.

yep, they certainly are. I’d kill for a 3 pedal, but since the fiance and I split this car, it’s gotta be an auto. Not a DD either, since we live in NYC. Really just used as utility on the weekends, but I figured if I was going to get an auto, I’d get something I’d enjoy & it all worked out timing / distance / price wise for this car.

I’ve got #2 covered at least!
Is there a way to tell the date of your DME software? Also, are there fixes that were sent out significantly after manufacture date? My car is an 05 and has had some dealership visits recently under prior owner for airbag recall etc - any chance they might have done any updates? (assuming no, as I type this LOLing).

I have a manual transmission that shifts pretty hard - do you think it will help with that?

There is - https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1081716
Scott’s laid out the versioning here, but if you can connect to your car via INPA or PA Soft (software’s avail everywhere on the internet, and the cables are cheap), you can see when, or if it was ever updated. Mine was all from the 2002 factory.
Possible they had, but unlikely apparently, from what he was telling me.
Def worth shooting him a line if you have questions- he’s a real nice guy

Manual? Probably not, but it’s possible the engine’s computer may have some bugs worked out that’ll let you shift smoother. There’s really no downside.

two thing will improve your manual e46:
Update the DME software(mine had a stutter around 2800RPM, and a DME update fixed it)
Remove the Clutch Delay Valve (CDV). It slows down clutch activation
, and will make you drive like a 3yr old.
WAY smother once I
removed that.

I really need to do that on my Z3. Makes heel toeing into anything below 3rd impossible

It saddens me that people put their BMWs away in the winter, I can comfirm that they are great fun in the snow and go pretty well given the correct tires. I respect your choice to winterize it. However my winterization on the e36 M3 is wax it, put snow tires on it, and confirm the heated seats still function.
BTW, your E46 is quite sharp!

That E46 went t hr ough 6 PA winters on a set of Blizzaks when it was my DD. It was fine with the tires on it. Honestly the only reason it goes away is a lack of space. I drive the 75' more often, so it stays here. My dd is a 19' VW Alltrack.
I’ll start the M3 once per week and drive it a few times per month until the weather is nice. It will be 13 years in my possession in February!
